The Illinois General Assembly on March 30 passed [HB 4324](https://www.ilga.gov/legislation/billstatus.asp?DocNum=4324&GAID=16&GA=102&DocTypeID=HB&LegID=137471&SessionID=110) by [Representative Bob Morgan](https://www.repbobmorgan.com/) and [Senator Julie Morrison](https://www.juliemorrisonforstatesenate.com/), which will make Illinois the 13th state to offer licensed insurance producers the opportunity to gain continuing education (CE) credits based on their active participation in a state or national professional insurance association. Producers may receive up to four hours of CE on a biennial basis by providing detailed records of attendance and involvement to the Department of Insurance. The bill is now on its way to [Governor J.B. Priztker’s](https://www2.illinois.gov/sites/gov/Pages/default.aspx) desk for signature.

The bill defines ‘active participation’ as serving on the Board of Directors, a committee, or task force of the professional insurance association. Producers who hold a position for multiple associations would only receive credit for service to one association. [NAIFA-Illinois](https://il.naifa.org/) is celebrating this legislative victory and hopes that this encourages current and prospective members to get more involved.

“Professional insurance associations, like NAIFA-Illinois, promote high standards of ethical conduct among their members and provide educational programs and professional development opportunities to association members,” remarks NAIFA-Illinois President, Tim Foley, “We believe this bill will ultimately benefit consumers by providing access to better-qualified advisors.”

Other states that allow CE credit for association membership include Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, and West Virginia.
