NAIFA is celebrating major legislative victories in Alabama, Indiana, Montana, and Minnesota. In the month of May, these four states have passed legislation that will mandate the completion of a semester-long personal finance course to successfully fulfill high school graduation requirements. There are now 23 total states that have similar measures.

Montana Governor Greg Gianforte signed [HB 535](http://laws.leg.mt.gov/legprd/LAW0210W$BSIV.ActionQuery?P_BILL_NO1=535&P_BLTP_BILL_TYP_CD=HB&Z_ACTION=Find&P_SESS=20231) into law on May 5, 2023, making Montana the 20th state to adopt the requirement.

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb signed [SB 35](https://iga.in.gov/legislative/2023/bills/senate/35) into law on May 4, 2023, making Indiana the 21st state to adopt the requirement.

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey signed [HB 164](https://advocacy.naifa.org/hubfs/AL%20HB%20164%20(2).pdf) in law on May 15, 2023, making Alabama the 22nd state to adopt the requirement.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz signed [HF 2497](https://www.revisor.mn.gov/bills/bill.php?b=House&f=HF2497&ssn=0&y=2023), an education finance omnibus bill, into law on May 24, 2023, making Minnesota the 23rd state to adopt the requirement. The omnibus bill includes the personal finance course requirement.

Members of our [NAIFA-Montana](https://www.naifamt.org/), [NAIFA-Indiana](https://www.naifa-indiana.org/), [NAIFA-Alabama](https://naifa-alabama.com/), and [NAIFA-Minnesota](https://mn.naifa.org/) chapters provided in-person verbal testimony in committee hearings, as well as comment letters to advocate for future generations to have access to resources to establish strong financial futures. Financial Literacy was a major talking point at state legislative days and meetings with lawmakers. We applaud these states for playing a critical role in investing in future generations and their financial security!
