Veteran Reimbursement

The Issue

An increasing number of states are participating in a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) program that reimburses military veterans for the cost of taking the insurance producer licensing exam. Under the GI Bill’s Licensing and Certification benefit, veterans may be eligible for up to $2,000 for the cost of taking an exam to become a licensed or certified professional in various fields. To be eligible for the VA examination reimbursement, a veteran must live in a state that participates in the VA program and states must have their licensing examinations approved by the VA.

NAIFA Position

NAIFA supports the VA program and has urged state insurance departments to partner with the VA on this issue. NAIFA has testified to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners requesting that regulators participate in the VA program to help veterans in their efforts to transition to a new career. In addition, some NAIFA state associations have already approached their respective state insurance regulators to recommend that they become involved in this important program to assist our nation’s veterans.

The following states do not include producer licensing as part of the GI Bill’s Licensing and Certification Benefit: DE, ID, ME, MA, NH, NM, NY, OR, PA, RI, TN
