Advocacy in action blog

A full-page advertisement run this week in The Hill newspaper encourages the U.S. Senate to pass the SECURE Act, bipartisan retirement-reform legislation that overwhelmingly passed the House of Representatives earlier this year.

NAIFA is among the 21 organizations endorsing the advertisement and advocating on behalf of the Act. Others include NAIFA advocacy partners the American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI), National African American Insurance Association (NAAIA), National Association of Independent Life Brokerage Agencies (NAILBA), and Women in Insurance and Financial Services (WIFS).

The advertisement spells out several of the benefits the SECURE Act would deliver to American small businesses, retirement savers, and others. According to the ad, Congress should pass the SECURE Act so that:

  • 700,000 more small business employees will save for retirement
  • 4 million pension holders don’t risk losing their benefits
  • 500,000 volunteer first responders can receive benefits
  • 1,400 religious organizations can continue offering retirement plans
  • 18,000 Gold Star families receive tax relief
