Congratulations to NAIFA-Michigan on achieving a significant legislative victory for insurance professionals across the state.
On July 29, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed Senate Bill 133 into law (sponsored by Sen. Sam Singh), creating a new pathway for insurance producers to earn up to four hours of continuing education (CE) credit through active participation in approved professional insurance associations. The legislation, now Public Act 78 of 2026, represents the culmination of years of advocacy led by NAIFA-Michigan.
The new law recognizes that meaningful engagement in professional associations is an important form of continuing education. By participating in association meetings, serving on boards and committees, and engaging in industry, regulatory, and legislative activities, insurance professionals strengthen their knowledge, leadership skills, and ability to better serve consumers. Under the new law, these activities may now count toward a producer's CE requirements when completed through an approved professional insurance association and verified in accordance with the statute.
This achievement did not happen overnight. NAIFA-Michigan worked for years to move the legislation through the legislative process, navigating changing political dynamics and abbreviated legislative sessions while keeping the proposal a top advocacy priority.
The association also credits NAIFA-Michigan member Chuck May who testified before legislative committees, as well as the many NAIFA members who participated in Day on the Hill advocacy efforts, met with lawmakers, and attended legislative receptions. Their grassroots advocacy demonstrated the power of members speaking directly with elected officials about the value of professional engagement. NAIFA-Michigan also recognized the leadership of Sen. Singh and Rep. Joe Aragona, who championed the legislation throughout the process.
